Kâtip Çelebi-Newton- RAENG, TÜBİTAK- Evaluation of the Public Transportation Performance and Accessibility (PT-P&A) Based on Smart Card Data

Project Aim

The main goal of this project is to analyse smart card data from a metropolitan municipality in Turkey to detect major travel patterns (such as commute trips, intermodal use, etc.). Furthermore, spatiotemporal mapping of PT demand in a Geographical Information Systems (GIS) environment will enable detection of most heavily demanded lines and stops, which can be further evaluated with additional data collected on site and via short surveys. While the overall accessibility of PT services will be evaluated in GIS environment from timetables and PT route data, detailed evaluation of high-demand PT stops are expected to reveal insights on factors affecting PT accessibility. Cross evaluation of PT demand maps and accessibility will be used to assess PT performance based on smart card data, which will lead to suggestions for an improved PT system that better serves the population’s needs, thus contributing to and encouraging economic development and social mobility in the study city.

Project Partners

Middle East Technical University, University of Aberdeen, Parabol

Parabol Contribution

Parabol is responsible for managing large-scale public transportation data, implementing algorithms, and developing data visualization tools in the project. Their role includes tasks such as data pre-processing, storage, and analysis, transforming raw data into usable formats, and ensuring scalable data pipelines using platforms like Hadoop, Apache Hive, and Apache Spark. They also adapt algorithms developed by academic partners to handle large datasets. Additionally, Parabol develops visualization tools, including various types of maps, to help stakeholders better understand and analyze public transportation system performance.
